Rob Schwalb and Stretch Goals!
over 2 years ago – Tue, Nov 09, 2021 at 12:49:58 PM

Hi, Backers!

I have two things to tell you about today. First, Michael Kuykendall asked me in the comments whether or not legendary game designer Rob Schwalb would be involved with this book. Rob wrote the Cypher System rules for Shotguns & Sorcery: The Roleplaying Game, and given his history with D&D, he would seem like a natural fit. I told Michael that we had no plans for that, as Marty has already written the 5E rules for this book.

But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. When Marty wrote Shotguns & Sorcery: The Pathfinder Conversion, I hired Owen Seyler to do a development pass on the rules, as I'm not a Pathfinder expert.

I've played a lot of 5E, and I figured I could manage those developer duties this time around, but hey, why not hire Rob — one of the lead designers of 5E — to help out? Fortunately, Rob thought that was a great idea too, so that's exactly what I did.

So, welcome Rob (back) to the team! Kinda feels like getting the band back together, and in the best way.

Second, I had a great time chatting with Jeff Thetford and Ed Greenwood this afternoon on their podcast, Mages & Sages. You can watch the whole thing on YouTube

While we were talking, I mentioned that this Kickstarter was just shy of breaking $30k and hitting our third stretch goal. Jeff pulled out his wallet and put us over the top right then and there. Thanks so much, Jeff!

So, we have two more stretch goals to announce for you!

  • At $32,500, we'll take that character sheet we unlocked at $27,500, and we'll make it a fillable PDF.
  • At $35,000, we'll add gilt edges to the deluxe hardcover to really snazz it up.

We only have 8 days left in the campaign, so please don't be shy about telling your gamer pals all about it. On that note, thanks to the folks at the Bite-Size Gaming Podcast for mentioning us on their Crowdfunding Corner today. We appreciate all the support!

The Kickstarter Is Going Strong
over 2 years ago – Sun, Nov 07, 2021 at 01:18:41 PM

I want to thank everyone who’s backed the Kickstarter for Shotguns & Sorcery: The 5E Sourcebook. The campaign met its funding goal in just four hours, and we’re now up to over 290%!

So far, we’ve added two stretch goals to the drive: a free PDF of the Shotguns & Sorcery comic book, The Wizard’s Wife, and a new character sheet for your games. When we crack $30k, we’ll add a ribbon marker to the deluxe edition, and there’s more to come after that.

Marty and I have been doing several podcasts and other interviews to help get out the word. For instance, you can hear/watch us on:

We’ve also gotten some solid coverage on news sites, including:

Coming up, you can also find us on the following programs:

Don’t forget, the Bundle of Holding offer for the Cypher System-powered Shotguns & Sorcery: The Roleplaying Game is still going on too. It ends the same day as the Kickstarter.

Speaking of which, the Kickstarter ends 10 days from now, on November 16. Don’t wait till that last minute if you can help it though. It’s all too easy to let it slip.

So, back the Kickstarter if you can, but either way, be sure to share the news with your fellow gamers. Or ask us to be on your podcast/stream/site. Or recommend us to your favorite news outlet.

Getting the word out about a project like this is always the hardest part, and we don’t have a massive ad campaign behind us. Instead, we rely on our friends and fans — folks like you! — to help us with that. So far, it's paying off well, but we want to finish as strong as we can.

Thanks for your support!

1st Stretch Goal Cracked! Next Two Up!
over 2 years ago – Sun, Oct 31, 2021 at 01:47:38 AM

Woot! We cracked the $25k mark for funding on the book, which means all backers will get a free PDF of our comic book, Shotguns & Sorcery: The Wizard's Wife

Just like with Shotguns & Sorcery: The Omnibus, we'll deliver that straight after the close of this campaign, through DriveThruFiction/RPG/Comics. That way you'll have all sorts of Shotguns & Sorcery goodness to tide you over until we deliver the 5E book.

So, with one stretch goal down, we have another. In fact, we have two.

This time around, we're going to make it a bit easier. However, both of them are still in keeping with our philosophy of not adding much more work — which would delay delivery of the book — and keeping your shipping costs low.

At $27,500, we will add a brand-new character sheet to the book. This will work a lot like a standard 5E character sheet, of course, but will feature the Shotguns & Sorcery logo on it and be done in the S&S style so you can proudly show your character off in the fantasy noir way. We'll also use this for the pre-generated characters that come with the adventure in the book, so you can just print them out and hand them to your players to jump right into a game.

At $30,000, we will add a ribbon marker to the deluxe edition of the book to class it up even more. Plus, it makes it a lot easier to instantly find that one special page you use a lot — like the map of Dragon City — when you need it.

Thanks again to all you wonderful backers for all your support. With your help, we're going to make this an even better book than it already is!

A Good Start!

Wow. Wow, wow, wow!

We hit double our initial funding goal just a bit over 24 hours past our launch. Thank you all so much!

Marty and I have been chatting constantly, and we've decided that stretch goals are a great idea — honestly, they're fun for us all — but like dragonfire (an enchanted liquor from Dragon City) they're best in moderation. We're only going to set up goals that will be easy to produce and not cost our backers much if anything more for shipping.

For instance, the first stretch goal — for when we reach $25,000 — is going to be a free PDF of Shotguns & Sorcery: The Wizard's Wife.

This is a comic I wrote as a stretch goal for the Kickstarter for Shotguns & Sorcery: The Roleplaying Game. It features a gorgeous cover by Jeremy Mohler, along with excellent interior pencils and inks by Shannon Potratz, with colors by Paul Little and letters by Ed Dukeshire. Backers of that Kickstarter have it already, but it's not yet available to the public. I'm not going to release it until at least a month after this Kickstarter funds, which means you'll have early access to it too. (But if you already have a copy because you backed that other Kickstarter, feel free to pass this one along to a friend.)

It features a sharp little story that fits Shotguns & Sorcery like an enchanted mitt, and I hope you enjoy it.

We'll have more to announce soon. Meanwhile, don't forget to tell all your gamer pals about the Kickstarter, and ask them to act fast. People who back before noon Central Time tomorrow — like you! — will get their printed books autographed by Marty and me. And if you pledge for a deluxe book, that'll come signed and numbered too.

We Funded!
over 2 years ago – Wed, Oct 27, 2021 at 11:39:54 AM

Wow! Thanks everyone! We actually funded in four hours, which is just stunning! As I write this, we're already approaching 125%

GO TEAM!

Good things ahead!

I'm going to take the evening to chat with Marty and see what we want to do about stretch goals. I'm a little leery of them, as I don't want to wind up having to produce an overwhelming amount of extra stuff that would shove the ship date for the book back and add loads to your shipping costs. (We can ship books at bargain-basement Media Mail rates in the US, but when we add other things, the price goes up fast.)

Still, they're always fun, and they can help us make the things we're already making better. We have loads of ideas that would fit, but if you have any suggestions, don't be shy of sharing them with us, either here or with me directly at [email protected]

Meanwhile, please share this project with your gaming pals on your favorite sorts of social media. The more people who join in the fun, the better we can make the whole project, and we still have nearly three weeks to go.

Once again, thank you all for the faith you've already shown in this passion project of ours. We can't wait to get it into your hands and onto your gaming tables too!
